Do you operate a Light Commercial Vehicle (less than 3.5 tonnes GVM) such as a utility, panel van or van designed to carry goods? If so, how much greenhouse gas emissions does an average LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLE produce in Queensland every year?

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2008) the average light commercial vehicle in Queensland travelled 19,300km in 2007. The ABS also confirmed that the majority of commercial light vehicles on Australian roads consumed diesel fuel, hence Ecofund based its estimation on this fuel type.

The ABS found that the average fuel consumption for the Light Commercial Vehicle category was 12.7 litres per 100km. Ecofund consulted the Australian Government's Green Vehicle Guide (www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au) and identified a vehicle that achieved 12.7 litres of unleaded fuel consumption per 100km. The Green Vehicle Guide stated that this vehicle would produce 0.333kg of greenhouse gas emissions per kilometre (combined urban/highway kilometres).

Ecofund then multiplied the kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions per kilometre by the average kilometres travelled per year. We then divided by 1000 to convert to tonnes before adding a 20% risk buffer to cover discrepancies between vehicle types and maintenance. Ecofund subsequently estimated that each light commercial vehicle car in Queensland on average produces approximately 7.71 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
